About your kundli

What is a kundli?

A kundli (janam kundali or birth chart) is a map of the sky at the moment and place of your birth. It shows which sign was rising in the east (the lagna), where the Sun, Moon and planets were, and how they fall into the twelve houses of life.

What details do I need?

Your date of birth, the exact time (from your birth certificate if possible) and the town or city of birth. The time matters most: the lagna changes about every two hours, and the navamsa every 13 minutes or so.

What is the difference between lagna and rashi?

The lagna (ascendant) is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at birth and describes your body and outlook. The rashi is the sign the Moon was in, and describes your mind and emotions. Daily horoscopes and Sade Sati use the rashi.

What is Vimshottari dasha?

A 120-year cycle of planetary periods. Your birth star decides which planet's period you are born into and how much of it is left; the periods then follow in a fixed order: Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn and Mercury. Each is divided into sub-periods (antardashas).

Am I Manglik?

A chart is called Manglik when Mars sits in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house. We check it from both the lagna and the Moon, and mention the common cancellations. It is very common and is only one of many factors in marriage matching.

Why may this differ from another website?

Software uses slightly different settings: the ayanamsa, true or mean Rahu, and how dasha years are counted. We use the Lahiri ayanamsa (the Indian government standard) and mean Rahu, and our positions match leading Indian software to within about a minute of arc.
