The traditional North Indian method of matching two horoscopes, also called Ashtakoota. Eight factors (kootas) are compared using the Moon sign and birth star of each partner, for a total of 36 points (gunas).
Traditionally 18 or more is considered acceptable, 24 or more very good, and 28 or more excellent. The score is one input: astrologers also look at both full charts, Manglik dosha and the running dashas.
Varna (1), Vashya (2), Tara (3), Yoni (4), Graha Maitri (5), Gana (6), Bhakoot (7) and Nadi (8). The higher the number, the more weight the koota carries.
When both partners have the same nadi (Adi, Madhya or Antya), Nadi koota scores 0 of 8. Common exceptions are when both share a nakshatra but in different padas, or share a Moon sign but have different nakshatras.
When the two Moon signs are 2/12, 5/9 or 6/8 from each other, Bhakoot scores 0 of 7. It is commonly treated as cancelled when the lords of the two signs are the same planet or friends.
No single number decides a relationship. Use the result to start a conversation with a qualified astrologer and, more importantly, with each other.
